History

KACHEP began as a research project in 1998 in Moroto and Bokora, currently Napak district. The project was created to investigate the use of herbal plants for the treatment of livestock with funding from Christian Veterinary Mission (CVM). In 2004, KACHEP grew and became a Non Government Organisation (NGO) based in Moroto, Iriiri and Nabilatuk—treating livestock, promoting agroforestry, training Community Animal Health Workers, and paying school fees while promoting evangelism.  The project’s goal was to promote herbal livestock medicine with pastoralists’ initiative. Currently KACHEP is based in Nabilatuk district, Nabilatuk town council with a commitment to improving livelihoods of men and women in agropastoral farming in Karamoja sub region. KACHEP’s goal is to preserve, promote and protect Karamoja's wealth of indigenous knowledge. KACHEP has a board of Trustees, a secretariate and is deeply rooted in the communities.  Furthermore in 2013, KACHEP signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Uttermost Ministries to promote the values, mission and vision of KACHEP including Uttermost being a funding channel for KACHEP donations from the United States of America. KACHEP is currently a vibrant organization in different thematic areas of Animal health, Climate change adaptation, Research and innovation, including livelihood improvement through evangelism. KACHEP has a valid NGO permit for 5 years and a M.O.U with the district local government of Nabilatuk.

Karamoja Christian Ethnoveterinary Program is unique. Most non-government organizations (NGO) are from different countries. They secure a grant, come in, stay a bit, come up with “western” solutions, and then leave. KACHEP is Ugandan run seeking Ugandan solutions to Ugandan problems in a sustainable Karamojong way. Since 2013, Uttermost Ministries, a ministry of Our Father’s House Christian Community Church in Chili, WI has had the role of boosting awareness and channeling funds.
