Climate Change Adaptation & Mitigation

To respond to the climate change problem in Karamoja, KACHEP is planting different types of trees.

Agroforestry

Joshua is the Agroforestry Officer at KACHEP. His knowledge of local medicinal plants is vast. The difference KACHEP is making in their neighborhood is HUGE. The Karamojong once believed Akuj (God, pronounced Akooch) is the tree planter. Through education, however, they are becoming fantastic orchard caretakers in this very HUNGRY land desperately in need of enhanced nutritional options.

KACHEP is innnovative and creative, making and distributing products to improve lives. Their medicinal products have made quite an impact. Access to medicine for animal treatment is difficult for the average Karamojong. Keeping the medicinal plant knowledge, which has been gleaned through history, accessible through plant nurseries is really making a difference.

Tree planting is extremely important in this sub-Saharan region of Africa! Trees for nutrition and trees for shade all matter in a place where trees are cut for making charcoal for cooking. Protecting soil from erosion through tree planting and proper animal husbandry is key!

Papaya
Papaya has many antimalarial properties, from the leaves to the seeds of the fruit! KACHEP has planted many fruit trees in the communities and conducted many trainings on proper care and use.
